Tools to help you out

The Functional Pilates Scientist’s Approach has been developed by a scientist and distils decades in science and Pilates into a method combining five key disciplines; Pilates, Physics, Education, Anatomy, and Research.

This method delivers a set of tools which will give you the knowledge you need to take care of your spinal and muscular health.

1. Physics

The study of physics includes the study of the laws of motion. Understanding these laws is the basis for understanding all movement. Moving involves both internal and external forces.

Learning to use and direct these forces effectively, enables easy movement whilst maintaining a stable centre and protecting the spine.

The principles of physics are used to decide the exercises that will best challenge your core stability, core strength and balance.

2. Pilates

A method of exercise that emphasizes posture and spinal alignment. Concepts and exercises developed by Joseph Pilates are only the starting point.

Where needed, exercises are customised to suit you, incorporating the latest research on rehabilitation and exercise.

The Functional Pilates studio is equipped with all the Pilates equipment. We use the equipment where needed to help train functional movement, address incorrect movement patterns and fine-tune existing movement patterns.

3. Education

Well-researched and easy to understand information about efficient movement is hard to find. It isn’t until there is injury or persistent pain that many seek help, often seeking medications or surgery to alleviate their pain.

Understanding your body’s movement habits will help improve movement function. Education is ongoing and part of each class, we discuss ‘why’ and ‘how’ to strengthen, stretch and mobilise. Education resources are also supplied to support your learning.

4. Anatomy

Our bodies are impressively designed and can be studied from different perspectives.

Focus in closely to study individual bones and the muscles that move them. Focus on the entire body to see it in coordinated motion. Change the environment and activity and observe if the brain/body connection can successfully adapt to move with ease.

At Functional Pilates, we study your body in motion to provide us with a comprehensive understanding of how you move.

5. Research

We're constantly studying the latest research via published papers, conferences and training.

We keep up to date with how the latest scientific knowledge is changing rehabilitation methods and improving understanding of the complexity of human movement.

At Functional Pilates, the resources we use to determine your specific program are based on both research and 12+ years of observation in clinical practice.

Are you ready to book your first session?
